McGhee thrilled to start with win at Sleaford

Jamie McGhee was a happy man after seeing his Sleaford Town side secure victory in his first game in charge of the Greens.

The 3-1 success over Sandiacre Town ended a run of eight straight defeats that ultimately saw previous boss Matt Evans part ways with Sleaford, McGhee having had to wait for his first game in charge after the game at Coalville on February 28 was postponed.

But his new charges began in style as Kyle Onyon, Ben Coleman and Ben Zalewski netted the goals to see off Sandiacre.

McGhee told the club’s media after the game: “It’s been a whirlwind week and it was important that on Wednesday we trained to how we want to set up and how we want to play.

"That then came to fruition today. I’m really pleased for the lads and for the club as it’s been a while coming, but they deserved everything that they got.

"We were in control for large parts of the game and if anything in the first ten or 15 minutes the lads were almost too keen, but once we’d made the error with the penalty Sandiacre scored we settled down and took good control and I think we could have won by more if I’m honest.

"But I’m really proud of them. They’re a young group and had a lot of information to take on, and for me as a manager it’s really pleasing that they all bought into that for this game.

"You’re going to go behind in football matches and the important thing is how we forget about that and the reason we’ve conceded, and react positively, so I never had any doubt there would be a reaction and I think we got that ten-fold really.

"It’s important the goals get spread around in our current position. You shouldn’t rely on one person to get the goals, so the fact that everybody played their part today was really good for us.”

The Greens will aim to build on the win when they travel to Nottingham on Saturday, as they face Gedling Miners Welfare in more UCL Division One action.
