MY YORK STREET: Boston United fan Pete Brooksbank doesn't want to talk about Adam Roscoe... but he's happy to remember beating Morecambe in the cup and that Lawrie Dudfield winner

As Boston United prepare to begin life in the Jakemans Community Stadium, The Boston Standard is asking Pilgrims fans to share their memories from the glorious - and sometimes forgettable - years at York Street. Today is the turn of Pete Brooksbank...

My York Street: Pete Brooksbank.

My first game: Looking back at the record books, I think it was the 1-1 draw versus Tamworth in September 1991. I don’t remember a thing about the game itself except that someone shouted a word at Peter Morris that my dad ordered me never to repeat.

My favourite game: The FA Cup game against Morecambe in 1996. I was unlucky in that I started supporting Boston at a time when interest in the club around Boston was at its lowest for decades and York Street could often be an empty, miserable place. That cup game brought fans flocking back in numbers. It was the first time I saw the stadium absolutely rocking, and boy did the team reward us.

My least favourite game: The festive derby defeat at home to King’s Lynn in 1999 was excruciating, especially as over 3,000 people had shown up. The 40-yard lob that somehow went in off Paul Bastock’s backside summed up a miserable afternoon.

My strangest game: You’d think winning 10-1 would be quite fun, but the annihilation of Sudbury Wanderers was a surreal, faintly embarrassing experience. I’m not ashamed to say I cheered when they got their goal, although in hindsight it probably came across as really patronising.

My happiest memory: Watching Boston take to the field against Workington in 2007 was a genuinely emotional moment. After Wrexham, I had resigned myself to the fact the club was going to be liquidated. Seeing the team run out on that glorious sunny day in their new kits, under new ownership, and with the prospect of a bright future is a memory that will stay with me forever.

My worst memory: Adam Roscoe’s overhead kick. I don’t want to talk about it.

My favourite goal: Lawrie Dudfield’s goal three minutes into injury time vs Lincoln City. They’d murdered us in the second half and it was as undeserved a winner as I’ll ever see. A fantastic moment.

My favourite player: Everyone needs a childhood terrace hero and Leroy Chambers was mine, so much so I used to take a banner to games with his name on it.

My favourite manager: The Rob Scott and Paul Hurst double act. They were a perfect fit for the club at the time and worked brilliantly with the resources they had at their disposal. I just wish they’d left in less acrimonious circumstances.

Best opposition player: Derek Asamoah. Scored all three goals as Chester won 3-1 at York Street in 2006 and was deservedly applauded off by the home fans at the end. Absolutely unplayable.

Best away side: The Barrow side that demolished us here in 1997 was lethal. I’ve still got no idea how they only finished one place ahead of us in the league.

I'll miss York Street because: It’s home, isn’t it? It’s where I grew up watching Boston and I still love coming back. No matter what happens on the pitch, it’s such a comforting place to spend a Saturday afternoon. Over the years you get to know every inch of it, flaws and all, and you come to think of it as an old friend, not just a building. I’ll miss the view of the Stump at sunset. I’ll miss the imposing size of the Town End (something I dearly wish had been replicated at the new stadium). I’ll miss the flags, the matchday routines, the proximity of the stands to the pitch. But most of all I’ll miss its location. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye.
