New Gainsborough Trinity chief Dominic Roma got Steve Housham's '˜blessing' before taking role

Roma, 30, takes over after Housham departed the club on Thursday evening.

The former Sheffield United defender, who has been at Trinity since 2011, says he is looking forward to the challenge of being player, captain and now manager.

He told the Standard: “After Tuesday night’s loss I got a phone call from the chairman (Richard Kane) saying that he’d spoke to Steve and that they’d agreed to part ways.

“I was then asked to do the job but I wanted to get Steve’s blessing and he was brilliant with me to be fair.

“He said he will support me in any way that he can.

“I’ve literally gone from playing to managing within three days.

“I’ve done abit of coaching at youth level a few years ago but that’s different to competitive football.

“I’m a teacher in my day job so preparing for lessons has stood me in good stead.

“I feel as prepared as I can be.”

Despite personal joy at being given the nod to assume managerial duties, Roma admits there is sadness that Housham has departed - especially after forming such a bond with the 40-year-old.

He said: “I was there from day one with Housh.

“He’s become a very good friend of mine so I was upset when the news broke.

“I’ve been his captain for the last two years, but I understand that’s the nature of football.

“The board have decisions to make on what they see best for the football club.”

Roma’s first match is on Saturday, when Nuneaton visit the Northolme.
