Edgley, who guided Town to the FA Cup’s second qualifying round last season, confesses his is a fan of knockout football, not just becaue of the thrills of all-or-nothing one-off games, but also because of the break from league action.

“It’s a day off from the league, and it’s always good to turn your attention to something different,” he said.

“Effectively, if we don’t so well in the league it’s my head on the line. I’m fully aware of that.

“These games, any of the cup games, they’re slightly different but a chance to do well and go on a run.

“I love cup games, I’ve always loved cup games. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing against it’s a one-off game and they’re great to be involved in.

“A lot of players never get the chance to play in the FA Vase or FA Cup, it’s brilliant we can do that.
