On road to survival, despite late arrival

Battling Gainsborough Trinity continued to plot a route to National League North survival with a goalless draw at play-off chasing Brackley Town on Easter Monday.

Trinity, who arrived just 30 minutes before kick-off after a problem with their transport, almost grabbed a late winner when Thomas Davie’s effort was ruled out by the referee’s assistant.

Manager Dave Frecklington, whose side are in the relegation zone on goal difference with two matches remaining, praised his players.

“We did the team talk on the bus and shortened warm-up,” he said.

“You could have excused the players for having an off day, but it was a fantastic point. Their attitude was absolutely different class.

“We looked solid and a threat on the counter attack.”

Frecklington, who took over from Dom Roma earlier this year, said it felt like he had just completed a pre-season.

“This is something like out eighth week and we are just finding what we have got,” he said.

“Two clean sheets on the bounce and four points over the weekend is a great return. “We have worked hard on the training ground. That wasn’t a fluke.”
