Parry Cup Final will be a repeat of last year’s match

This year’s Parry Schools Cup football final will be a repeat of last year’s Retford versus Worksop classic with Retford’s Carr Hill, the holders, meeting Worksop’s Redlands.

Carr Hill won last year’s memorable encounter by the odd goal in seven and another great contest is in prospect.

Redlands totally dominated their semi-final at Langold but found goals hard to come by against a spirited defence and an inspirational goalkeeping display from Jake Griggs and in spite of a goal in each half by Tom McIntosh and Jack Tomlinson, were not disappointed to hear the final whistle, especially when Jake Bannister hit a last minute consolation goal for Langold.

In the other semi-final Sir Edmund Hillary matched Carr Hill for a time with their excellent brand of passing football but could not match the fire power of a Carr Hill attack dominated by free scoring Jay Smith and eventually fell 4-0 with further goals from Alex Wenham and Declan Heath.

All three cup knockout competitions have reached the the final stage with Everton and Dunham contesting the Middle Divisions Cup and Gamston meeting Blyth in the Small Schools Cup.

The academicals of Norbridge have one hand on the Division Three championship after comfortable wins over closest rivals, Carlton Ramsden, and Langold Dyscarr, while St Swithun’s have become title favourites in Division Seven after a high scoring 6-4 defeat of Gringley, their goals coming from Kieron Major (2), Cameron Dixon (2), Ryan Martin and Hayden Fox. Bassetlaw Boys shook off their disappointing form of last wee,k and although they were once again on the losing side, produced what was probably their best performance of the season when they travelled to meet the City of Leeds A team.

In the first half they showed greater spirit than the Green’Un Cup finalists and out tackled and outran them to lead 2-0 after goals from Ryan Dixon and Luke Smith.

Aftere the interval Leeds surged into the attack and it was no surprise when they eventually equalised but received a shock when Bassetlaw immediately reclaimed the lead when Lewsi Comley was on hand to make it 3-2.

Leeds eventually ran out 5-3 winners with a burst of three late goals from excellent strikes.

Bassetlaw now play in the finals of the Midland Counties Seven-a-sides.

The Bassetlaw invited squad is George Atkinson (Clarborough); Adam Duffy, Kieron Hooley (capt); Finn Sweetnam, Liam Frost (Sir Edmund Hillary); Luke Smith (Norbridge); Jay Smith (Carr Hill); Jack Wilson (Harworth); Ryan Dixon (Redlands); Regan Watkinson (St Augustine’s).
