Safe! Trinity survive, despite last-day drama

The Blues lost 5-1 at FC United of Manchester, but a 4-2 defeat for relegation rivals Worcester City at champions AFC Fyld meant Trinity survived by one point.

Manager Dave Frecklington guided the club to safety after taking over in February ahead of 13 consecutive matches against the best sides in the division.

At the final whistle chairman Richard Kane said Frecklington would remain.

“Without question he is my man,” Kane said. “He is a good guy and is passionate.

“He has taken to the town. It’s fantastic. He deserves his chance at this level and to do what he needs to do with the team.

“Next season it will be a Dave Frecklington team. That guy takes no prisoners and brings discipline to the team.”

The manager said he would sit down with the club to discuss the future this week.

Frecklington also praised the players after the last-day escape, saying at the end: “I’m not going to worry about the performance or the result.

“It is about what the lads have give me and Terry (assistant manager Terry Fleming) since we walked into the building.

“Apart from the second half against Chorley (in a 4-0 defeat) and the second half today — two 45 minutes out of 26 — we have been good, and against the top sides in the league.

“Everyone had written us off. No one thought we could stay up. But I see what goes on in the changing room and they have been a real together group.

“It was a rollercoaster of emotions. We have been neck-and-neck with Worcester in the last weeks. I am just thankful we got through.”
