Scott Garner is determined to keep his place in the Boston United starting XI after being given a 'point to prove'.

After five games on the bench the centre back returned to the back line for last night's FA Trophy tie against Chesterfield, scoring in a 1-1 draw before the hosts were eliminated on penalties.

Garner was given his chance after loanee Pierce Bird returned to Eastleigh this week.

And now he's back in the side, the former Halifax and Gusieley man wants to stay there.

"Bit of a point to prove as no player wants to sit out on the bench, it's frustrating," Garner told The Standard.

"It's something I've never done at Boston, so I don't want to get in the routine of that either.

"By the second half I felt myself again, getting stuck in and winning the ball. Getting the goal was the cherry on the cake.

"As a defence we've been brilliant this season, so to be out the team was a bit of a shock. But I just knuckled down and carried on, working hard and knowing my chance would come.

"Hopefully, I can keep my spot for the rest of the season."

Boston in no way disgraced themselves against the in-form National League Spireites, but Garner cut a frustrated figure at full time.

He added: "I think that was a great opportunity to get to Wembley. We said this could be our hardest game en route, and I really fancied us, to be honest.

"One of the aims of my career is to get to Wembley, so I'm absolutely gutted.

"Its was a cup game and whoever it is, you've got to beat them on the night.

"We had chances and got on top but we've got to start putting two and three away and then the game's done."
