Town and young Owls entertain

Dinnington Town and the Sheffield Wednesday Academy side entertained a crowd of 220 at Phoenix Park on Tuesday, and both emerged with credit at the end of a 2-2 draw.

To allow for the warm conditions and the need to make a number of substitutions, the game was played in three 30 minute periods.

Drawing on their new link with Worksop Town, Dinnington started with a blend of youth and experience.

Both keepers were prominent in the early stages with some good saves, the best of which came on 23 minutes when Marcus Weston made a point blank stop to prevent Wednesday from taking the lead.

Dinnington quickly counter attacked and an accurate through pass found Alex Nightingale, who slotted the ball home to give Town a deserved lead. They had the chance to extend their lead on 30 minutes but Greg Ramsden mis-kicked with just the keeper to beat.

Both teams made numerous substitutions at the end of the first period and it was home keeper Weston who was again called into action to deny the Owls again with another good save.

Town’s Lufudea was brought down outside the area by the Wednesday keeper, but the hosts failed to take advantage from the free-kick. Lufudea continued to be prominent in Town’s attacks, but failed to convert a one-on-one chance, then saw a fine effort tipped over for a corner.

Weston was at the heart of the action once more, with 10 minutes remaining, when he brought down a forward, and Simon Hanna converted the penalty to level the scores.

But Town regained the lead two minutes later when the evergreen Liam Cartledge scored with a powerful left foot shot at the far post. Wednesday were not to be outdone however, and Harry Frost hit back on 86 minutes when the home defence failed to clear. Dinnington now turn their attention to another attractive home game, with the visit of Rotherham United on Saturday with a 3pm kick-off.

Worksop Town then visit next Wednesday, at 7.45pm.

Town starting XI: Weston, Ya Ya Myala, Ramsden, Rafferty, Taylor, Smith, Lufudea, Kabeya, Cartledge, Nightingale, Wade.
