Wise Owl - Wasn’t the Sheffield Wednesday manager just sticking to the rules?

The manager has stood by his actions stating that he was only following the rules - and he should be applauded.

Megson fulfilled the rules by starting the Johnston Paint Trophy game with six first team players.

But a minute into the game against Bradford Megson made the first of his substitutions - Nicky Weaver was replaced by Richard O’Donnell.

To see Weaver starting the game was a surprise and Megson has since said he wasn’t fully fit and wouldn’t have started in a league game.

O’Donnell hadn’t replaced Weaver between the sticks for very long when further changes were made, Jose Semedo went off for Giles Coke and David Prutton was taken off for Cecil Nyoni.

Despite the under strength team the players on the pitch did extremely well. We kept possession and passed the ball around, the only bit missing was that bit of quality infront of goal. It was difficult for Clinton Morrison upfront on his own.

I agree with what Megson did. With such a small squad, we shouldn’t be risking our best players for a competition that fans probably aren’t fussed about either way if we win or not.

Our league games should take priority over any other competition this season. I would much rather see the Owls win promotion back to the Championship rather than succeed in another competition and spend a third season in League One.

This week also make the closure of the transfer window and it was nice to see some new faces coming to Hillsborough.

I’m excited to see what Rob Lowe will do upfront following his move from Bury.

With Gary Madine finding form and Lowe scoring 49 league goals in two years - plus the recent signing of Chris O’Grady - our strike force is certainly looking a lot stronger than it did a few weeks ago.

I for one can’t wait for Monday night when the Owls are live on television once again taking on Charlton Athletic. Let’s just hope after the last two 0-0 draws that we have already played on Sky this season, we can score a couple of goals this time round and get three points.
