Shiels confirms Tigers departure

The centre-half went under the knife earlier in the year after damaging his knee ligaments during the 2012/13 season.

Shiels, who was signed from Hucknall for a then club record fee in February 2010 by Peter Rinkcavage, went on to make 129 appearances under three different managers.

The 23-year-old told the Guardian that Worksop Town were unable to offer him a deal to stay at the club, and so he has decided to move on while he rehabs his knee.

“I’ve left the club because they couldn’t really give me anything to stay while I get fit again, so I’m just going to use my physio in Chesterfield and look for a club again when I’m fully fit,” he said.

“It’s a shame because I didn’t want to leave, but I believe things happen for a reason.”

“I wish Worksop the best of luck and want to say thank you to the fans for the four seasons I had there, I enjoyed every minute.”

Shiels became a fan favourite with his all-action style of defending and picked up several awards at the club.

He filled in at right-back, left-back and central midfield during his four seasons, and scored nine goals.

Shiels hopes to be fit to return to the game early in 2014.
