Sleaford Town U18s edge table-top clash

Sleaford Town U18s maintained the pressure on league leaders Ruston Sports in the championship run-in with a narrow win over close rivals Fishtoft on Sunday.

Both teams competed keenly to seek the advantage in blustery conditions which meant chances at either end were scarce.

The home side were edging the percentages in possession when Ian Mitchell was awarded a penalty for the visitors midway through the first half.

Scott Jenkins become Sleaford’s hero when he pulled off a save low down to thwart George Drury’s penalty and keep Town in the game.

The second half kicked off with Sleaford playing into the wind and within two minutes of the re-start they had the lead.

Brett Callow took on the Fishtoft defence only to be fouled in the area as he homed in on goal. Jack Charles-Myers strode up and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way with the penalty.

The hosts fought hard all over the pitch to preserve their lead and had to dig deeper when goalie Scott Jenkins was forced to leave the field and was replaced by forward Jordan Berry.

Town continued to pose a threat going forward and a tremendous rearguard display from Lewis Russell, Rob Walters, Charles-Myers, Harley Cocks and Harry Hancock guided them over the line for a well-deserved victory and the three points.

The victory moves Sleaford Boys back up to second place in the league ahead of their next match at South Division pace setters Rustons on Sunday (kick-off 10.45am).
