Smith ready to face old foes as Boston United prepare for Darlington

Boston United’s no-nonsense target man could make his official Pilgrims debut on Saturday after completing the two-match suspension which stunted his start to the National League North season.

And taking to the field could see him reacquainted with the Quakers, against whom he was involved in some fiery battles last season.

Smith’s Stamford team were on the losing side against Darlington in Evo-Stik Northern Premier League action in both March and April, as the Quakers earned promotion and the Daniels were relegated.

But Smith certainly made himself known to his rivals, especially in an ill-tempered April meeting where he was accused of elbowing an opponent.

“I played against them last year, they know all about me,” Smith said.

“They probably won’t be happy to see me, you know what I mean.

“But I’m just looking forward to playing for Boston. We want to get three points.”

Manager Dennis Greene is eager for Smith to hit the ground running, adding: “I think that’s what we’ve missed. He looks a real player for us.

“He does what it says on the tin.

“He’s a target man, he can score goals so he probably is the missing link.

“The two games he’s played in are probably our best two performances of pre-season. You’ve got to say he has helped us.

“Every time the ball goes into the box everyone is wary because he’ll attack everything and he’s dangerous with his physicality.

“He’ll be a real asset. It sticks to him when he gets it up front.”

Darlington’s squad includes former Pilgrims defender Liam Marrs, who made the switch in the summer after rebuffing the Qaukers’ approach the previous season.

Kick off at Darlington, who are currently groundsharing at Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Park ground, will be at 3pm.
