The 21-year-old keeper kept a clean sheet on his debut, Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Curzon Ashton, which saw the Pilgrims move up to third in the standings.

And despite rivals having games in hand, Spiess believes United have every chance of claiming a top-five finish.

Asked whether he had any qualms about dropping down to the National League North, the former Notts County and Torquay United keeper replied: “No, not at all.

“We’ve got real quality in the side. Sometimes you might have to drop down, but I think Boston will be in the Conference next season, so it’s not really dropping down in that sense.

“You’ve got to always believe you can achieve it.

“In the same time, hopefully I can play as many games as possible.”

After leaving the Gulls earlier this season, Spiess has been part of the Alfreton Town squad, but behind Matt Duke in the pecking order.

So he jumped at the chance to become Dennis Greene’s latest keeper after Henrich Ravas’ move to Derby County.

He will now compete for his place with Jason Alexander.
