Spiess unwilling to take the positives from Fylde defeat

He pulled off a series of impressive saves throughout the contest to keep the scores down, but the result hung heavily on his shoulders as he left Kellamergh Park.

“I look at it and I made some good saves, but at the end of the day I conceded five,” Spiess said.

“It’s never nice to concede five.

“You look at it and they’re the games where you do concede more, when the keeper’s tested.

“I made some good saves but I’m still disappointed and down about that.”

The defeat, coupled with North Ferriby’s victory at Corby, saw United drop down to sixth, out of the play-off places.

And the long drive back from the Fylde coast gave the Pilgrims plenty to chew over.

“We weren’t good enough. It was a disappointing result and a big game for us,” the German-born keeper continued.

“It was a must-win game and a six pointer.

“We weren’t at it today, that’s why we made them look like world beaters.

“If we’d have been at it today they wouldn’t have looked as good as they did.”
