Craig Elliott believes the National League North will need to be a squad game more than ever this season - and that’s why he’s delighted to have competition for places all over the pitch.

With the season running a month shorter than planned because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there looks set to be more midweek fixtures than most clubs are normally used to.

With that in mind - coupled with ambitions of success in cup competitions - Elliott believes every member of his new-look squad will have a vital role to play.

“It’s hard (to select a starting XI) when it comes down to nitty gritty, but we all know in our league it’ll be competitive and you do need that squad,” the manager said.

“It’s usually teams who are at the top that have got that sort of depth and quality.

“You’re going to be extremely lucky not to pick up suspensions and injuries and things like that.”

Elliott believes the importance of squad depth was evident last season as the Pilgrims pushed for a play-off spot while reaching the FA Cup’s second round.

“I expect a lot of games in midweek, but that’s something we had last year,” he added.

“We had a strong bench and there were good players who didn’t even get a shirt.

“If you want to be successful you need a good, strong squad. The Trophy, FA Cup and league, we’re keen to do well in all those competitions this year.”

Elliott has worked hard to bring in talented players who, he believes, have the right personalities to fit in with the squad.

Following two pre-season wins against Gainsborough Trinity and a Hull City under 23s side, the Boston boss admits he is excited about the potential in his dressing room.

“I’m still learning about them and they’re learning about me, but you get feelings for a group you’ve got,” he said.

“Everything’s going really well. I’m enjoying working with them and they’re a great bunch to work with, individually and as a group.

“I feel very lucky to have the level of players we’ve got. You need both sides, the quality and togetherness to get you through games.

“We’re going to be tested and there’s going to be ups and downs, like there always is.

“You’ll see more of that personality coming out from the players as we get different challenges.”
