Staying Young

MATT Young is ambitious as ever going into pre-season, after an injury disrupted campaign last year.

The midfielder has committed to another year with Worksop Town, and is looking to play a ‘big part’ in the club’s promotion bid.

Young suffered a cruel blow in a pre-season friendly last summer, but is determined to strive towards the same goal he set before the injury in 2011.

He said: “I’m going into the season the same as I did last season.”

“Under Martin (McIntosh) my aim was play-offs, minimum and I was looking forward to being involved.”

“But I broke my leg in pre-season which is one of the worst things that can happen.”

“My ambitions are exactly the same this season, we’re building a solid squad and the gaffer wants things to keep running as professionally as possible.”

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be up there for the play-offs.”

Young, who has made 77 appearances and scored three times for Tigers in a season and a half, didn’t have to think too hard about the decision to return.

“I had it in my head that I wanted to return and briefly spoke to the gaffer to say that if the offer was right I’d stay.”

“I wasn’t looking elsewhere and I’m pleased to be here again.”

“With the signings we’ve been making it’s obvious Jason (Clark, chairman) is giving the gaffer his full backing.”

He’s not just excited about life on the pitch this summer however.

The former Huddersfield Town man explained: “I’m qualifying with a Masters in Structural Engineering at the end of June and starting work.”

“At nearly 27 it’s a welcome to the real world for me, but I’m looking forward to it.”

“Hopefully it will run well alongside my football.”
