Steve Housham delighted as Gainsborough Trinity return to winning ways

Gainsborough Trinity boss Steve Housham admits his side must kill off games better after watching his side return to winning ways following a hard fought 2-1 victory over Corby.

Simon Russell opened the scoring two minutes before the break, before Liam Davis struck in first-half stoppage time to give the visitors a firm grip on the game.

Corby pulled a goal back through a Greg Mills penalty on 67 minutes, but Trinity stayed strong to wrap up the win.

Housham said: “I am pleased that we put in a good battling performance, but we should have had the game dead and buried.

“We finished the first half strongly and again started the second half well, but as they say, a two goal lead is a dangerous one and that’s how it turned out. We saw it out though and it’s three points.

“Corby didn’t really come into the game until they got their goal. It did look like a penalty, Josh (Lacey) got caught the wrong side of his player, he’s got the ball and Josh has caught him - but credit to him, he’s 20 years of age and has played every game this season.

“He has come on leaps and bounds and will learn from his mistakes I’m sure of it.”

Goalscorer Davis was included in the team at the expense of Jamie Yates, with Housham left delighted at the impact he made.

“We brought Liam in to do a job defensively, to help double up on Greg Mills as we know he’s a problem down that side,” he added.

“It was also going to enable us to give Kane the licence to get on, on the other side with Newy (Marc Newsham) in the hole.

“Jamie would have been down not to have been involved, but he has got his chance with the injury to Marc and credit to him, I thought he was superb and Liam has taken his chance, but like i said, I’m pleased for them all.’

“The negatives for me though have to be the last fifteen minutes though. Credit to them though, they didn’t give up after going behind and they made it tough for us, but we did enough to hold on.”

Housham now hopes his side can build on the win and take advantage of a key spell of four home games out of five coming up.

He said: “We’ve got a run of four home games out of five coming up now, starting with Saturday’s game against Bradford and it would be brilliant to get the people of Gainsborough on the Northolme.

“We are back in the top ten again and are looking to push on - and with everyone pulling together - we can hopefully kick on.

“Come on down and scream yourselves hoarse. Myself and the players appreciate it and it gives us an extra gear.”
