Ten men snatch a dramatic victory

A SUPERB Lee Bognar strike with the last kick of the game made it 14 wins in a row for 10 men Town in a fiercley contested game at in-form Rustons.

In a rehearsal for the County Cup semi-final in three weeks, Town showed their character after having Leigh Hutchinson sent off in the 50th minute to keep the pressure on the top two teams.

Town were without Ashley Page but welcomed back Ashley Holland after his four game suspension and he was straight into the heart of the defence with Greg Andrews and Locking either side.

Gainsborough started brightly and were the side asking the questions during the first 15 minutes, without creating any clear cut chances.

Lill was first to be booked in the game after he was harshly adjudged to be offside and yellow carded for dissent.

Town went close again through Jamie Shaw after he played a neat one-two with Bognar but was thwarted by the impressive Ruston goalkeeper.

Rustons were trying to get a grasp of the game but finding it very difficult due to Towns endeavor to keep the pressure on, mainly through Steve Hutchinson and Greg Andrews in the middle of the park.

The half went by with not a lot for either goalkeeper to do.

The main talking point in the game came in the 50th minute when the game boiled over after Hutchinson got caught up with the Ruston right -back and a scuffle ensued, after which the referee had no qualms showing Hutchinson the red card for aggressive behaviour.

Towns’ heads could have dropped but they continued to battle and were still dominant, creating all the clear chances.

Craig Mettam came on to replace Holland halfway through after he was tiring due to his long absence.

Rustons came close to scoring when there centre-back headed the ball and it rolled for what seemed forever to the goal but hit the bottom of the post and Lill cleared before the Ruston striker could get to the ball.

From then on it was all Gainsborough, who despite being down to 10 men were the only side that looked like scoring.

First Lill was the provider after he got past his man down the left to put in a cross that the outstanding Bognar was unfortunate not to reach.

Lill then went close himself after some excellent work by the industrious Joe Owen down the right who got to the byeline before setting Lill up but his weak right foot effort rolled wide after a deflection.

Town were awarded a corner in the dying seconds of the game.

Owen swung the ball in which was half headed clear by the Ruston defence, but only to Bognar who scissor kicked the ball back and into the net over a stranded keeper much to the enjoyment of the Gainsborough Town following.
