The midfielder has come close to returning to the Jakemans Stadium a handful of times since his original loan spell in 2014.

But on Saturday the midfielder pulled on the Pilgrims’ shirt once more.

“Me and the gaffer have kept in touch quite a lot over the past few years,” Agnew told The Standard.

“I’ve nearly come back once or twice, but I thought this was the right time to come back.”

Twenty-one-year-old Agnew (pictured) first joined the club on loan for the second half of the 2013-14 campaign.

But his performances were enough for Sunderland to offer him a professional contract.

However, he made just one first-team appearance for the Black Cats.

It is understood that Agnew chose Boston from a few offers, one of those believed to be National League North rivals Darlington.

But Agnew says his affinity with the club was enough to convice him that Boston was the right place for him.

He marked his return with a goal - a casually clipped home penalty - and a man of the match performance, but it wasn’t enough as FC United left with a 3-2 victory.

“On a personal level, it was great to get a goal and man of the match, but a shame about the result,” Agnew added.

“We’ve got goals in us. If you look at the game, from what I’m hearing, it’s been silly goals that have cost us.

“If we can cut that out and put a few clean sheets together we’ll climb up the table.”
