Tom Platt wants Boston United to be fighting for promotion once again when football is able to resume.

The Pilgrims may yet be involved in some form of play-offs this season if the National League decide to include that method to help determine promotions within their divisions.

But if Boston have kicked a ball for a final time this campaign, Platt is desperate for the club to mount another challenge next season.

“We got in a good position, it was really disappointing for the season to stop like it did,” said Platt, whose side were fourth in the National League North standings when the coronavirus pandemic saw the game shut down.

“You never expect football to be cancelled so it’s a strange time, but there are people who may have family members who are ill. We’ve got to put people first right now.

“We’ve had a really good squad this year and hopefully the majority of the lads will stay around because I think we could have a good chance when next season starts.”

Platt - the Pilgrims’ Players’ Player of the Year - formed a good understanding with fellow midfielders Andi Thanoj and Brad Abbott, and he hopes his teammates will follow him in signing a contract extension.

“We all want to get back playing football and when we can we want to do well,” Platt added.

“We had a good season and we want to build on that. I enjoyed playing with Brad and Andi and I hope they stay and we can continue that.”

Question marks remain about when football will resume, but Platt is backing United manager Craig Elliott to ensure his squad will be ready for action... whenever that is.

“Next season will be a little bit different because we’ve had a longer break than normal,” he told The Standard.

“But last season we had a really good, tough pre-season and I think that put us in a good position for the start of the season.

“Hopefully we can do the same again.”
