Town beat young Millers

DINNINGTON Town beat a youthful Rotherham United side at Phoenix Park, in their final outing before Saturday’s NCEL Division One campaign opener.

The home side won 3-2 after a lively, entertaining game as their pre-season preparations came to a close.

After an even opening period with few clear cut chances, Dinnington took the lead on 20 minutes with a trademark Liam Cartledge header after a penetrating run and cross by Martin Wade.

Wade caused the Millers problems all evening with his pace.

Rotherham United made a number of changes at half-time and equalised on 50 minutes with a powerful header from Beavers, which gave Town keeper Thornton no chance of saving.

The game opened up with chances at both ends but Town retook the lead on 63 minutes when Rotherham failed to clear a corner and Simon Mirfin scored with a flying header.

The key moment in the game came on 75 minutes when Rotherham should have equalised when a powerful shot hit the underneath of the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

Dinnington swiftly counter attacked an Mirfin got his second goal of the game with a scuffed shot which just crept over the line to give Dinnington a two-goal advantage, when moments earlier it should have been 2-2.

Rotherham came back strongly and reduced the deficit with a skillful volley from Denton and despite further pressure failed to find an equaliser.

Town will travel to Clipstone on Saturday in the league opening fixture, before hosting Hemsworth Miners Welfare at Phoenix Park on Tuesday night in the League Cup (7.45pm).
