Gainsborough Trinity’s new recruit Liam Davis is undaunted by the prospect of stepping up from the Evo-Stik First Division to the Blue Square Bet Conference North.

A two division leap has seen the 22-year-old follow in the footsteps of Blues boss Steve Housham, who moved to the Northolme from Brigg himself.

Speaking to the Standard, Davis insisted that the step up in competition excited, rather than worried him.

“It’s something I look forward to more than anything,” he said.

“You get big games in pre-season, against the big clubs and it’s a benchmark – if you can play against them you can play against anyone.”

The prospect of playing at a higher level was one of the reasons why he jumped at the chance to sign on at the Northolme.

“At the beginning of last week I got a phone call, asking whether I would be interested, and I went down on Wednesday for a chat with Steve.”

“He told me what he wanted, and made an offer and said I could get back to him.”

“I thought about it for about 30 minutes before making up my mind.”

“The size of the club attracted me, it’s the biggest club around where I’m from apart from the professional clubs, and they’re always aiming for the play-offs, always trying to win.”

“You don’t expect a season of fighting to survive, you’re looking to finish high up the table.”

Davis, who can play on either side of midfield, counts Selby and Armthorpe in his previous clubs, and last season he featured 46 times for Brigg, scoring 14 goals.

He described his style for the Trinity supporters he’ll be playing in front of next season.

“I’m positive thinking, I like to go past people and I’m always looking to get forward and create chances and goals.”

The youngster has already met some of his new team-mates, and believes Trinity are putting together the right blend of youth and ‘older’ heads.

“You’ve got to have a balance, there’s a lot of players with experience at the level and a few years at the club, but I think you need fresh, young players too.”

“And you expect the experienced lads to help out the younger ones.”
