Two out of two for Sleaford after win at Staveley

Sleaford Town secured their second win in a row and a third successive clean sheet as they won 3-0 at Staveley Miners Welfare on Saturday (writes Finley Smithson)

After a bright start, Sleaford took the lead after 36 minutes, as a free-kick from Joe Wilkinson was switched into the path of Riley Wilkinson. The winger’s shot was saved by Harrison Torr, but the rebound fell kindly to Lewis Rowland, who placed his shot into the net.

At the start of the second-half, Sleaford were awarded a penalty. Rowland was found in behind, and as he went to chip the keeper, Torr brought him down. Ashall stepped up and coolly converted from 12 yards, doubling Sleaford’s advantage.

Sleaford silenced any question of a comeback when Andy Whalen netted a third just after the hour mark. A cross from Wilkinson on the wing found the striker, who scored his first goal of the season.

Tempers then flared and Staveley’s Bobbie White saw red in the 69th minute after a heavy tackle on Greenfield sparked a tussle between both sets of players. With White deemed to have swung a punch at Ben Ashall, the referee sent him off.

And Sleaford then saw the game out comfortably to secure the points.

Sleaford then hosted Retford FC on Tuesday night in a match played after this week’s Standard went to press.

Attention then turns to the FA Vase on Saturday when Sleaford make the trip to Nottinghamshire to take on Clipstone, before then going to West Bridgford in the league next Tuesday night.
