"We all need some certainty!" Boston United chairman David Newton calls for swift resolution to National League North season

Boston United chairman David Newton has called for a swift resolution to how the National League North campaign will be concluded.

Yesterday it was announced the three National League divisions would not complete their outstanding fixtures following an overwhelming vote from clubs.

United were among the clubs who backed this decision as action remains on hold due to the coronavirus lockdown.

But the club now faces financial uncertainty as one of the teams currently occupying a play-off spot.

Clubs from the three divisions will now be asked to vote on how to end the campaign. Options look set to be either to null and void or work out league tables on a points per game basis, with an option of playing play-offs likely to remain on the table.

Due to this, United will have to extend their players' contracts indefinitely while clubs not involved will see contracts come to an end in early May.

This leaves teams in the play-off spots in a precarious position with little to no revenue coming in at present.

"It's complicated for all of us and ideally we'd like a resolution from the league as soon as possible. I said that in an email I sent yesterday," Mr Newton told The Standard.

"I think (yesterday's decision) was inevitable. We voted for it.

"It resolves the situation for clubs that aren't in the play-offs. Clubs like ourselves that are in the play-offs, we still need a quick resolution because our season hasn't ended.

"Our season won't be able to end until the next step, whatever that is, is made."

As things stand, United are fourth in the National League North, but would move up to third on a PPG method, having played two games fewer than Brackley Town.

Mr Newton says that the uncertainty of when football will return while having to pay players adds extra pressure.

He continued: "That's something I don't think any club could sustain.

"If we knew we would play in June, say, we could take action. But we don't know when, or if, they could even be played.

"We could be expected to pay players in a long interim period, and we can't afford to do that.

"There's no solution that pleases everybody, but we all need some certainty."
