A hectic summer has seen the Holy Blues recruit a number of promising young talents, as well as experienced duo Simon Ainge and Martyn Woolford.

"It's been really good, we've got a good batch of players that are probably completely different to the players Gainsborough have had before," Woodhouse explained.

"I said a bit back, we've signed a lot of people that nobody's ever heard of, for want of a better phrase.

"But I'm hoping by the time we get to Christmas we've created a few more heroes for the fans. It's been good watching the lads gel.

"I don't want to sound like an old man talking about back in my day, but back in my day when we turned up for pre-season we wee all about a stone-and-a-half overweight and it took us about six weeks to get back in shape.

"These lads have come back flying and the fitness levels are incredible. That's testament to them."

Trinity will go into the Northern Premier League season with a smaller squad than usual as the COVID-19 pandemic has put pressure o n club finances.

Woodhouse added:"We need some real luck with injuries as we're going to carry a squad of about 14-15. Probably the smallest squad the club;s ever worked with but I'm excited to see what this group can do.

"Ideally I'd like four or five more but finances dictate. I've spoken to Richard (Kane, chairman) on a regular basis and the club's done everything they can.

"I've got to respect it is what it is this year. Whatever happens in the season comes second to putting the club first. We've put a batch together who can compete and the lads'll give everything."

Fans returned to the Northolme on Saturday as Trinity beat Workington 1-0.

Luke Lofts won it for Trinity after he buried a loose ball following a corner on 41 minutes.

"I've missed that 15 who stand down my dug-out telling me what I'm doing wrong and what formation to play and how we should be winning this game," the manager joked.

"But when you take the fans away football just isn't the same. It's not been anywhere near the same and to get them back is brilliant."
