Horncastle Town were left paying the penalty following their 1-0 home defeat to Wyberton.

The Villagers left the Wong with all three Lincolnshire League points following Jamie Elston’s goal.

But the Wongers were left wondering what could have been after James Doughty saved Michael Harness’ spot kick.

“He tucked it into the corner, but the keeper got there and tipped it away,” manager Andrew Shinn reflected afterwards.

“Their keeper played really well.

“He saved a penalty and was the man of the match.

“But we got what we deserved.

“He was claiming everything in the box and sometimes you need to put a bit more pressure on the keeper, let him know he’s in a game more.”

Indeed, it was the manner of the result which left the management fuming.

“We let the lads know our feelings after the game,” Shinn added.

“They didn’t outplay us, they set up defensively and we got the wing backs forward and had a lot of the play.

“But we played scrappily - our passes didn’t find the target, it was just sloppy.

“We expect a lot more commitment.

“It was really windy out there, but that’s no excuse.

“We can play better than that.”

The result sees Horncastle sitting fourth in the table, with seventh-placed Wyberton eight points behind but with four games in hand.

“They’ve now got four games in hand on us, but they now just need to win three of them to overtake us,” Shinn added.

“That would see us lose another place. It’s frustrating.

“We never expected to run away and win the league this year but we wanted to be higher up there.”

Town are at CGB Humbertherm on Saturday (KO 3pm).
