Will Thornton thanks Gainsborough Trinity for helping him enjoy his football again

Will Thornton has thanked Gainsborough Trinity for helping him to enjoy his football again... and the defender hasn't ruled out a return to the Northolme.

With the Northern Premier League season being halted the Holy Blues are missing out on the majority of their revenue streams, brought in from match days. And they are asking supporters to help donate to the cause... which could see them offered a reward for their donation.

"Financially, we've been hit like every club has," said manager Curtis Woodhouse. "The Crowdfunder is an important thing for us as it helps give us a platform to grow next season.

"The fans are pitching in and helping and doing what they can to keep the club alive.

"In non-league, that's exactly what football is all about. Every cup of tea or pint bought behind the bar makes a difference.

"It's important the community gets behind the club now more than ever. The main thing is that Gainsborough Trinity will still be playing football."

The Holy Blues are hoping to raise £10,000 by May 5. By the end of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend there was already £3,530 in the pot.

The Crowdfunder page on the club's website reads: "Gainsborough Trinity, which are a well financially run club, have suddenly found that overnight the club has been thrown into a financial crisis with the chairman recently quoting a figure in excess of 40 per cent of their overall income arising from turnstile and match day monies.

"With, in all likelihood, no competitive football to be played for the foreseeable future, this page allows supporters to assist in submitting a donation to the club to help plug the gap in finances as a result of the shutdown caused by coronavirus pandemic."

Different amounts donated include different rewards, including shares in the club, a place in next season's team photo, the chance to be director for the day and a place on a Wall of Fame.

Chairman Richard Kane added: “The club feels a very real sense of responsibility to do everything it can to support our stakeholders - many of them members of the Blue Army themselves.
