Winning run continues for Gainsborough Trinity at Warrington Town

Gainsborough Trinity made it five straight wins with a hard fought 2-1 victory at Warrington Town to go level on points with Guiseley and back into fourth place in the NPL Premier Division on Saturday.

That also opened up a five point gap on seventh-placed Warrington at a wild, wet and windy Cantilever Park.

Boss Russ Wilcox kept faith with the side that eased to a 4-0 win over Hyde United last time out, Ronnie Kokkonis again keeping his shirt, with Harrison Beeden retaining the armband.

Kokkinos opened the scoring on six minutes after Javelle Clarke did well to gamble in behind.

Lewis Earl misjudged his header, Clarke flicking the ball inside for Kokkinos, who had ghosted into the box undetected. Taking a touch before firing across the Town keeper, a slight deflection took the ball into the back of the net.

Ben Elliott tried to nip in behind as the ball held up on a pitch that was absorbing plenty of water, as the sky seemingly emptied the contents of the Warrington canal, running adjacent to the pitch.

But Elliott was denied by David Robson, who was out smartly at the forward's feet.

Callum Edwards tested Robson with a low effort that he handled well on a greasy surface.

But there was nothing he could do on 33 minutes, Reece Daly steering home a smart, side-footed strike, that gave Robson no chance.

However, Trinity restored their lead two minutes from the break.

Fraser Preston got to the by-line and dug out a cross. Earl could only head the ball up in the air, and Harrison Beeden watched the dropping ball onto his right foot before swivelling to volley past Hewlet.

Mulhern then almost extended the Gainsborough lead in stoppage time.

Catching a volley, he sent the ball sailing over the frantically backpedalling goalkeeper, the ball cannoning off the bar and back into play. With the keeper tangled in his net, no one had followed in for the visitors

Wilcox made a double change at half-time as conditions continued to deteriorate. Mulhern was replaced by Connor Brown and Clarke by Ben Blythe.

On the hour Fraser's snapshot on the turn - on target - was comfortably gathered.

The hosts, chasing the game, built sustained pressure.

But Trinity, with a lead to defend, did so valiantly - putting bodies on the line in awful conditions.

Blythe looped a header onto the roof of the home net while Town's young substitutes provided plenty of energy on a sapping pitch.

The Yellows threw the kitchen sink at the Blues, Hawkins firing wide from 10 yards, before an inswinging Daly corner hit the back of Denton, virtually on the line, to loop over the bar as he challenged Robson.

And when Daly's 93rd minute strike from 20 yards out flashed narrowly wide of post and bar, Trinity had done enough to record a fifth straight win and return to Lincolnshire with another three points safely in the bag.
