Wongers desperate for bragging rights

The Wongers are desperate to get one over old rivals Skegness Town and earn the bragging rights, according to manager Mickey Stones.

The two East Lindsey sides have a friendly rivalry off the pitch, but all that will be out of the window on Saturday when Horncastle Town host the Lilywhites in the Balcan Lighting Lincolnshire League.

And with both sides in with a chance of finishing the season on top of the table, the stakes are high.

“It’s our biggest rivalry, even if they’re no closer to us than anyone else,” joint-boss Stones told The News.

“I’ve known Chappy (Skegness manager Nick Chapman) for years, I used to play against him 20 years ago.

“We get on well and the club officials all get on well with each other.

“But we all want to beat them.

“If we can’t win the league then we definitely don’t want them to win it, and they’ll be desperate to try to do anything they can to stop us winning it.

“They’d much rather a team like Rustons or Grimsby Borough (Academy) won it.

“We all want the bragging rights.”

The two sides were due to meet at Skegness’ Vertigo Stadium at the weekend, but the adverse weather forced all Lincs League matches to be postponed.

“I think it’s easier to take a game being called off when you see it coming,” Stones added.

“We wanted to keep our momentum going, but when it started snowing on Wednesday we all knew it wouldn’t really get played.

“It’s been difficult this week as we haven’t been able to train, but we’re hoping to get the game on at The Wong this week.”

Horncastle face Wyberton in semi-finals of the Supplementary and Challenge Cups following this weekend’s contest.

But Stones doesn’t believe anyone will be easing off.

“It’s a chance for lads to show they should be in the squad for the semi-finals and maybe even a final,” Stones added.

“I think the lads have got to be up for it on Saturday.”

Kick off will be at 3pm.
