Joe Greswell’s managerial career has been ended early as the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League came to a halt.

The Wyberton boss - who had steered his side into the Lincolnshire Junior Cup final - has had his tenure ended prematurely as the step seven league is among a number of non-league divisions which have been scrapped due to the Coronavirus.

“I think it’s the correct decision to finish the season,” said Greswell, who has been told the county cup clash will not be staged.

“It’s a strange way to finish for me personally, but as I said a few weeks back, health and safety has to come first and some things are bigger then football.

“I’m gutted for the boys as the Lincs Junior Cup has slipped through our fingers again, but we are not the only team who will be left gutted about the whole situation.

“I look at Hykeham, who have been unbeaten all season, who would have won the league and have had that taken away from them.

“I feel for all teams who are in a similar situation to us, teams who still have things to play for. But it’s the correct decision to end the season.”

Instead of going out with a bang, Greswell’s final game in charge of the Colts turned out to be a 6-1 defeat to Hykeham.

“It’s not the way I would have wanted to finish for me personally, getting battered and suffering my heaviest defeat as a manager,” he said.

“But nevermind. Overall we have had a good season that could have ended great.

“We had plenty of league games left and I believed we could have finished in the top five.

“Making the semi-final of the Supplementary Cup and, obviously, the final of the Lincs Junior Cup (were highlights).”

Greswell reflected on his time in the Colts dug-out fondly.

He added: “I look back at my time with a lot of great memories.

“We won more games then we lost.

“In four seasons, we made four semi-finals and four finals.

“My only regret is not winning a trophy but, as I’ve said, I believe if the lads stick together then it will only be a matter of time until they win something.”
