Yates: ‘Points outrank our team’s performances. . .’

The Blues defeated bottom club Hinckley United 2-0 on Saturday to help them bounce back from a 3-1 loss at top side Chester in midweek.

Speaking to the Standard, Yates said: “Wins are the important thing at this stage.”

“At this moment in time, it’s not really about the performance; it’s more about the points.”

“Although we do always try and put on a show, as long as we get the points, that is what matters.”

Trinity are on their travels again in their upcoming fixture against Oxford City on Saturday and Yates says that the same principle of points over performance applies.

“We’d like to entertain the fans but there is no doubt about it, the three points are more important no matter how we get them,” he said.

“The teams around us will be thinking the same thing.”

Paul Connor came into the side and scored both goals in the victory over Hinckley and Yates believes having someone with Connor’s experience in the squad is vital.

“I was delighted for him. He’s a nice bloke and he gets on with everyone. He has got a lot of experience at league level, which is good for us, and it shows how muchstrength in depth we have,” said Yates.

With no midweek game for Gainsborough this week, something that won’t happen again until the end of April, winger Yates says that the team are ticking off the games now.

He told the Standard: “Having so many games keeps us ticking over that’s for sure.”

“At this level we tend to tick them off so we’ve won at Hinckley and we’ll go to win at Oxford.”

“We think we need nine or ten more wins, with a couple of draws, and we think that will be enough to get a play-off place.”

“We have the squad capable of doing so.”

The Blues follow up their trip to Oxford with a home game against Bradford Park Avenue on Tuesday night.
