Horncastle Town Girls 5

Birchwood Belles 1

On a fresh and breezy autumn morning Horncastle welcomed Birchwood Belles to The Wong.

Before the game started, the team were very pleased to accept their new team rain jackets which have been kindly provided by sponsors Brian Stokle, of BLS Roofing and PVCu Roofing Specialist, and Neil Paxton of NCP Painting and Decorating. A big thank you goes to the sponsors for their support. Horncastle girls wasted no time in wearing them during warm-up and had to be asked to remove them prior to the game as they were that chuffed with them.

Horncastle started off well with accurate passing and timely tackles and all the offensive hard work was rewarded when Jasmine Harris scored the opener. The goal really buoyed the team as they continued to attack and from this pressure Harris was on hand to score a second time.

Horncastle dominated the attacking play and it was with this pressure Birchwood were unfortunate to concede an own goal.

The girls soaked up pressure from a tall Birchwood side, with defenders Phoebe Robinson and Freya Vine showing grit, determination and skill to clear their lines. Horncastle’s stand-in keeper Ella Fawcett kept a clean sheet in the first half with a brave display of goal keeping as she dived in amongst boots and studs to claim the ball on several occasions.

Horncastle used great passing to break out and goals by Harriet Emsell and Anais Rosie-Willis saw them go in 5-0 up at half time.

The second half saw the Wongers facing a stiff breeze and a revitalised Birchwood came out firing, using the breeze to keep the home side pinned in their own half. Birchwood eventually scored a great goal to get them on the scoresheet.

This spurred on Horncastle who really dug in and piled pressure back on Birchwood with corner after corner but, due to a great defensive display. Birchwood managed to keep them at bay.

Player of the match was Jasmine Harris.
