Former world champ to speak at Sports Awards

Olympian and World, European and Commonwealth champion Derek Redmond willb e the special guest at this year’s Bassetlaw Sports Awards ceremony.

Redmond won gold medals in European, Commonwealth and World Championships throughout his career as a 400 metre sprinter.

Unfortunately, his career suffered serious setbacks time and again through injury.

The most notable injury came in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, when his hamstring snapped mid-way through the semi-final.

With the help of his father, Derek hobbled over the finish line, leaving a lasting impression with all who witnessed it, one of strength and determination.

Redmond will be inspiring the audience with a speech about overcoming obstacles and how to continue performing at an extremely high level despite suffering numerous injuries.

The former athlete will draw on his vast experiences as an international sportsman to provide a fascinating and motivational speech.

A spokesperson for Bassetlaw Council’s sports development team told the Guardian: “The Bassetlaw Sports Awards 2013 organisers feel extremely privileged and honoured to have an international sportsman in attendance at the ceremony.”

“We would like to take the opportunity to encourage everyone to nominate the Bassetlaw people that have stood out and really made a difference in their sport.”

“The deadline for Nominations is Friday 1st November 2013, so don’t wait, nominate.”
