Nathan Langley, 13, is an up and coming ‘thrower’ with the local athletics club, competing in shot put, javelin, discus and hammer.

And he’s one of 150 sporting youngsters picked for the 2013 Sainsbury’s School Games Talent Inspiration Programme.

Proud mum Liz told the Worksop Guardian: “Athletes have been picked across the country to be guests at the School Games, to see what a major games is like.”

During the Talent Inspiration Programme, Nathan will attend workshops, observe high level competition and take part in practical sessions, to better understand the demands of high performance

The organisers also hope to support the young athletes in creating a plan for their own sporting career.

Liz said: “He’s very excited about it.”

“He’s the first to be really sporty in the family, we’ve no idea where he gets his skills from.”

The Outwood Academy Valley student was nominated for the programme by his mum, after Sports Nottinghamshire invited schools and parents to put forward talented children.

Sheffield is hosting the School Games this weekend, finishing on Sunday.

Around 1,600 of the nation’s finest sporting youngsters will take part in the multi-sport event.
