Saturday was a day of highs and lows for the Wragby athlete, who admitted he managed to end the day on a positive.

The first event was the hammer, which resulted in Jim throwing a season’s best of 25.73m.

The shot putt followed, and an outdoor season’s best of 8.27m was recorded.

However, a below-par effort in the heavy hammer of 9.47m saw Jim fall short of his Irish record by three points.

However, he ended the day on 1,415.

His throws were enough to win the triathlon.

“Conditions were very challenging all day with a low of -4 and a high not much above freezing,” Jim told The News.

“I’m convinced that in warmer conditions I would have broken the record.

“Nevertheless, my disappointment did not last too long as Ireland beat Wales in the rugby.”
