The 144th Open: Westwood going in right direction on moving day

The Worksop golfer, who dropped three shots in the closing three holes last night, has gone back up the leaderboard on moving day.

But with the course conditions conducive to good scores, chances are he hasn’t moved enough in the right direction.

As it stands, Westwood, out in the second pairing of the day with John Senden, is tied for 49th, seven shots behind leader Dustin Johnson.

Johnson will tee off at 3pm alongside Sheffield’s Danny Willet, who is nine under.

Westwood had a solid start to his Sunday – the third round of the tournament – with no bogeys and two birdies on the front nine.

He picked up a shot at the seventh for the third time this week, and then birdied the ninth.

A birdie at 14, another hole he’s found favourable, was followed by a bogey at the 17th ‘road hole’ but he rallied at 18 to reclaim that shot.

The final three holes have not been kind to the 42-year-old, accounting for five bogeys so far, enough shots to have put him in firm contention.

Today, he drove the ball longer and hit more greens, and although he missed 50 per cent of the fairways, it was his best round of the week.

Fellow Notts golfer Greg Owen is out on the course, also at three under, and has parred each of the first four holes.
