Lee’s last chance for 2012 major

LEE Westwood’s final chance to land a major in 2012 comes this weekend in South Carolina.

The Worksop man is in action at the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Resort, hoping for a return to form.

Last weekend he suffered a disappointing warm up at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, finishing 70th at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

An opening round of 68, two under par, including five birdies, gave him an encouraging start and a two over 72 on day two kept him in contention.

But Saturday’s disastrous round of 81 – his worst in 10 years – saw him slip down the field.

With no chance of winning he shot a 73 in the final round to close 14 over par for the tournament.

It is expected more than 30,000 will watch this weekend’s major, as Westwood hopes to go better than his share of third place in the tournament in 2009.

He tees off on Thursday with Bill Haas and Angel Cabrera.
