This week it was announced that golf would be able to be played once again tomorrow (Wednesday).

A statement issued by county secretary James Lammin read: "The Lincolnshire Union of Golf Clubs fully support decisions made by the Governing body of Golf, England Golf and those laid down by the UK Government on the return to golf during these concerning times.

"The 46 Golf Clubs in Lincolnshire and those throughout England have been given clarification on outdoor recreation and rules on social distancing.

"These will come into effect now golf can be played from Wednesday (May 13) and, in particular, the configuration of groupings on a golf course.

"Under new government rules released on May 11, the following groupings will be permitted upon resumption of play: Individuals playing golf on their own; Two-balls comprising of individuals from different households; At the discretion of the golf club, members of the same household playing in two, three or four-balls.

"Social distancing rules must be strictly adhered to at all times."

The statement added that further clarification is being sought from the Government relating to the opening of golf clubs' professional shops and driving ranges as well as the carrying out of club fitting and coaching sessions.

It added: "All Lincolnshire Golf Clubs have received a “Play Safe Stay Safe” document that gives comprehensive details on communication, volunteers, business support, preparing the facility and playing the game.

"All to help for preparing the golf course and putting the correct measures in place for social distancing by ensuring there is high focus on hygiene and physical distancing."

New restrictions facing golfers are expected to include the removal of on-course items such as rakes, ball-retrievers, benches and bins and the closure of practice areas.

A minimum 10 minute interval between tee times will be introduced, a booking system introduced to ensure the safety of staff and golfers and the closure of clubhouse and locker room facilities.

Golfers must keep two metres apart at teeing areas.

A statement released by England Golf said: “It is important to stress that this remains an extremely difficult situation throughout the UK and we are acutely aware that many lives have been lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.“The effects of the virus will continue to be felt for a long time to come. As a sport we must work together to resume play responsibly as and when the relevant Government determines it is safe to do so.“We must ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved is maintained at all times.“Golf clubs and golfers have observed the lockdown very well and must keep it up and act responsibly as play resumes.“We are seeking further clarification from the Government regarding other golf-related facilities.”
