Horncastle Men’s 1sts 5

Horncastle Hockey Club’s Men’s Firsts continued their title push by leaving Leadenham with a 5-1 victory.

Depite being without a few regular players, they started the game well, playing some good passing hockey throughout the team, something they have been capable of but haven’t done enough times this season.

Horncastle’s dominance was was soon rewarded following a flowing build-up.

The ball found Dave Seymour in the D and he finished well, firing the ball into bottom corner.

Horncastle doubled their lead when a good passing move found Rob Scott, who finished calmly.

Horncastle didn’t take their foot off of the gas and Scott soon doubled his tally with another good reverse-stick strike which found the bottom corner.

Not long after he had his hat-trick, scoring an almost identical goal to his previous two.

The first half came to a close with Horncastle dominating the game, with the defence of Yeldham, Cartwright, Bradley and Partridge staying resolute.

The second half followed the same pattern of play as the first, with Horncastle controlling the game and making Leadenham do all of the running.

The home team were persistent, keeping the Horncastle defence under enough pressure to be a worry, but any chance they did have was stopped by keeper Murrell.

Midway through the second half Murrell produced an outstanding reaction save to deny Leadenham a goal, but shortly after a well-worked passing move caught the Horncastle defence on the back foot and resulted in a goal for Leadenham.

Horncastle’s scored again when Foster’s shot found the bottom corner.

Spalding 2nds 3

Horncastle Ladies took to the pitch on Saturday in their penultimate home game of the season.

Fielding a strong squad, the home team were competitive from the very first whistle.

Some great attacking chances were created by the right and left wingers, with strong injections from Cannon in the middle.

The opposition fought back, putting the Horncastle defence under immense pressure.

Great play saw keeper and captain Neame saved and released some cracking balls out wide.

The two Tokeloves kept their composure at the back, defending the goal and releasing the ball to the wings.

Shortly before the half time whistle blew the home team gave away a penalty flick to the opposition after tight activity within their defensive D.

The first half finished with Horncastle falling 1-0 behind.

The first 10 minutes of the second half saw much movement of the ball between both halves, resulting in a quick succession of goals in favour of Spalding.

Horncastle came back with a vengeance, A. Tokelove intercepting passes and releasing the ball to the midfield.

Driving fiercely down the left wing, Beall nipped past two defensive players and took a close shot at goal, narrowly missing.

Another opportunity arose shortly after, the ball being released to Wood on the right, who drove speedily down and across the byline, flicking the ball to the penalty spot, where it was heavily fought over by both teams.

No more goals were scored despite the heavy attacking activity witnessed by the home and away teams alike.

The final score was a hard fought 3-0 win to Spalding.
