Guardian duo are casting off

AFTER over eight years, and well over 400 columns, we have decided to call it a day as the Guardian’s angling correspondents.

Our decision is based, in the main, on health and work commitments for us both.

Looking fondly back, the one thing that we realise is that we owe the success of the column to a myriad of people who have supported us and we owe a debt of thanks to all of our local tackle dealers ,who have been so generous over the years in our many ventures including the inter schools competition, the many charity matches and the junior teach-ins.

Likewise we are indebted to the many local commercial and fishery owners and their teams including (but not exclusively) Lynda at Lakeside, Bill at Lodge, Rick at Wetlands, Terry at Riverside, the Grafton AA and the Worksop & DAA, not only for the many times they have all donated their waters, but also for time they have taken helping us to compile our reports.

Last but by no means least, we would like to thank you the readership for taking such an interest and it is true to say we have enjoyed making many new friends along the way.

We will continue to send in reports to our successors on an ad-hoc basis and we are committed to running the national Voyage Open in September for people with learning disabilities, so we will not be disappearing from the scene completely and we look forward to seeing you all on the bank side.

Finally we would like to offer our sincere apologies to Steve Biddle for an honest mistake we made in last week’s column regarding the Cottam length on the Trent, and our old friend Rob Allen has asked us to pass on that Worksop Uniteds’ AGM will be on Monday 14th January at Manton Athletic Club, and will start at 7.30pm.

So for the final time may we wish you all “tight lines” and good health.

ANYONE interested in becoming the Worksop Guardian’s angling correspondent, email [email protected] or call 01909 543012 to speak to the sports editor.

The Guardian’s Graham Smyth said: “On behalf of the newspaper, and I’m sure the readers, I’d like to thank Roger and Stuart for their dedication to local coverage of their sport.”

“We’re on the lookout for someone of the same mind, who knows the local scene and can put together columns that show off the wealth of talent in the district of Bassetlaw, as well as regular updates of all the local events and matches.”
