Horncastle bowlers claim county title

Jayne Taplin and Margaret Walmsley made it through to the final of the Lincolnshire Women's Bowling Association EBF Ladies Pairs on Sunday.

They were competing at Louth IBC, where they came up against a strong pair from Dunholme, Barbara Heath and Janet Wright.

The really close game resulted in a 20-20 score at the culmination of the 20th end.

Margaret, playing two, was one down when she went to the head and she produced a fantastic wood to take the Dunholme bowl out to put Horncastle one up.

Barbara did not manage to change the head, resulting in Jayne and Margaret taking the title and progressing to represent Lincolnshire at Newark in April.

In the EIBA Ladies’ National competition Area 4 final Mary Johnson and Olive Wells narrowly lost by one shot in the pairs.

The National fours, where Horncastle are represented by M. Johnson, Olive Wells, Jayne Taplin and Judith Moody, has been re-arranged for March 17 at Grantham, due the Beast from the East.

Olive Wells will play Pam Cutts from Nottingham on March 14 at Lincoln.

This weekend Horncastle IBC will host the Lincolnshire under 18s’ last 16 round.

The winners from each group will progress to the finals at Louth on April 22.

Spectators are welcome.

Horncastle’s LIBA Mixed League team met a strong Scunthorpe side at home.

A initially-close fought contest saw the home team go on to win on all 5 rinks and taking the aggregate by 148 shots to 83.

Rink scores: J. Scholey 26-17; T. Nunn 33-16; O. Wells 34-13; D. Wells 24-17; G. Lancaster 31-20.

The Horncastle LIBA Men’s League team met Stamford on home soil.

The match was closely fought with Horncastle eventually winning convincingly by 107 shots to 79.

Horncastle won on three rinks, drew on one rink and lost on one, winning winning by 15 points to three.

Rink scores: J. Bontoft 14-20; T. Nunn 21-21; Keith Taplin 22-15; N. Burton 2-9; C. Starsmere 29-14.

A Horncastle friendly side played Tattershall’s Castle Bowls Club at home.

A tense match saw the game end in a 72-72 draw, with Horncastle winning on two rinks, losing on two rinks and there was also one drawn rink.

Rink scores: K. Argent lost 11-16; J. Rapley drew 16-16; N. Dallas lost 16-19; P. Fixter won 16-9; D. Pill won 13-12.

Another friendly was against the Lincolnshire BEVP’s, where Horncastle lost overall 93- 107, winning on two rinks and losing on three.

Rink scores: P. Scholey lost 13-23; P. Fixter lost 8-37; J. Scholey won 22-17; G. Wells won 33-11; T. Wells lost 17-19.

The LIBA Men’s Over 60s team travelled to Lincoln, where they won 14-4, the total shots going 101-94 in Horncastle’s favour.

Rink scores: N. Burton won 23-15; G. Lancaster won 32-13; D. Ladlow won 19-9; John Hoyles lost 13-33; S. Bradley lost 14-24.

Horncastle travelled to Spalding, losing out 16-2 with a total shots score of 112-63.
