For punters fancying a long odds gamble there was a big pay out from bookies as Chapman’s nine-year-old went to post a 40/1 shot.

Jockey Joe Cornwall had his mount tracking the leaders much of the way round in the 2 mile 2 furlong chase. One paced between two and three fences from home, the horse rallied after the last fence to lead on the flat and stayed on well to have a two and three quarter length distance between him and Un Anjou, a 9/2 shot in second place.

Tayarat who carried 10 stone was well out of the weights following a modest run of form and was running only his second chase after a debut fourth at Uttoxeter a week ago.

Chapman’s Epee Celeste won in February, but the trainer then took the eight-year-old to the prestigious Cheltenham Festival where he was outclassed.

He ran in a handicap hurdle, the third race on Sunday’s card hoping to repeat his February win, and though out of the frame this time was a creditable fifth.
