Friday November 9

FOURJACKS

Hexham 3.00 WIN

Five times Tim Easterby’s seven-year-old has gone to post. Five times he has come back in second spot. But that’s not to say the sizeable son of Karinga Bay is unreliable or untrustworthy. Far from it. His form, both in bumpers and novice hurdles, stands up to the closest scrutiny, including last month when he returned from a mammoth absence of 623 days to bustle up a warm odds-on favourite at Wetherby and pull 17 lengths clear of the rest. Easterby has an atrocious strike-rate for a trainer of his standing, but if his charge can avoid the bounce factor today, he has a fine chance of getting off the mark at last, even though it’s a competitive, little heat. By all accounts, the testing ground could make the racing quite attritional on what is a stiff track. Therefore, given that Fourjacks is a half-brother to Old Benny (who won the 4m National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2008), his stamina should prove a vital asset.
