And despite losing 4-1 to his Macedonian opponent, the scoreline tells the story of a major battle before Jarvis went down 12-10, 5-11, 9-11, 19-21, 14-16.

Putuntica went on to win the silver medal.

Jarvis, 16, competed alongside Luke Savill and Alex Ramsden in the team event and they were agonisingly beaten into second place in their group by Russia.

Having defeated Romania and Belarus, both 3-0, they faced the Russians for a winner-take-all clash to top the group and go into the knockout stage.

But despite Skegness Grammar School pupil Jarvis winning both his matches, Savill and Ramsden were unable to conjure a win between them as England went down 3-2 - Savill losing the deciding set of the deciding match 14-12.

In the Junior Doubles, Jarvis and Savill were eliminated in the last 32 by Dimitrije Levajac of Serbia and Russia’s Artem Tikhonov.
