Kenwick Park golf: Wilyman secures May medal as Hunt bags first ace

Fine conditions produced some good scoring as Kenwick Park GC's men section played their May medal.

Pete Wilyman won Division One with 77-9=68 on a countback from Ian Dickinson (78-10=68). Mick Upton came third with his excellent round of 71-2=69 which was also the day’s best gross round.

Steve White was the clear winner in Division Two with 88-15=73 from John Beverley who took the runners-up spot with 89-15=74 on a countback from Dave Foxon (86-12=74).

Junior player Freddie Fearn won Division Three with a good round of 86-19=67 to reduce his handicap by two shots to 17. Bernie Stafford came second with 90-20=70, ahead of Kevin Cowdroy (97-24=73).

And it was a day to remember for Chris Hunt who used his new six iron to score his first hole-in-one at the 172-yard par three 17th hole.

* The first of six nine-hole rounds were played for the George Penrose Salver.

At the end of the stableford format series, the best three rounds of each player will decide the winner.

Nik Fox (7) is the early leader after winning round one with a good score of 20 points. Michael Smith (16) came second with 19, and Jim Fletcher (12) took third spot with 18 on a countback from Sam Done (-2).

* The good weather deserted the ladies who had to play a qualifying medal round for the Anne Dickinson Salver in the rain.

The new clubs must be working well for Andrea Smaggasgale who, despite the wet weather, had a fine round of 82-9=73 to win the silver division and record the best gross score. Julia Labbett came second with 98-17=81.

Jane Briggs won the bronze division with 99-22=77 ahead of Anne Gardiner (99-21=78), while Ranka Cartledge won the copper division with 114-29=85 to push Rose Stevenson into second with 118-29=89.

The top eight scores qualify for the knockout rounds to decide the winner of the Salver.
