Ladies’ Firsts play out Bourne draw

Boston Tennis Club competitive play has been dominated by senior teams competing in the Dunlop Lindum Lincolnshire Seniors Winter League 2020-21 in recent weeks.

The club has teams entered in this league, spread over two divisions for the men’s teams and three divisions for the ladies.

At this point every one of the eight teams has played a match apart from Boston Men’s Thirds, who begin this weekend.

Boston Ladies’ Firsts compete in the top division and played and drew with Bourne recently.

The team was Rachel Atkinson, Rachel Gedney, Sue Burnett and Sharon Thorogood.

The match ended with four sets apiece, which can happen with the scoring system in this league as there are no deciding tie-breaks in each rubber.

On Saturday, Boston Tennis Club Men’s First team – Ray Frankish, John Gibson, Mike Burnett and James Newton - played Boston Men’s Seconds in a Division One match, their first fixture of the season.

The cards were stacked correctly and it was a good win for the team, but not without the loss of one set following strong resistance from the second team’s Larry Churchward, Robert Bonser, Andy Clamp and Ian Scott.

On Sunday there was another match between Boston teams with Boston Ladies’ Seconds and Thirds meeting in Division Two.

This contest was finely balanced and well contested.

Overall there were three tie-breaks which made for an exciting match which ended at 4-4. Catherine Ellis, Helen Duckett, Lesley Gibbons and Sharon Thorogood competed for the Seconds with Hilary Calvert, Jenny McGarel, Helen Cook and Claire Smith representing the Thirds.

Boston Ladies’ Fourths, competing in Division Three, travelled away to Horncastle, to face the hosts’ Third team.

Boston’s Hilda Hastings, Jenny Murphy, Sue Dring and Norma Hunter won 3-1.

There have been further matches in recent weeks in the Dunlop Lindum Lincolnshire Seniors Winter.

Boston Men’s Fourths played Horncastle in Division Two where they dropped only one set.The team was Richard Cozens, Robert Bonser, Geoff Presland and Richard Tupper.

This was a good start for the Men’s Fourths in their first match of the season.

The Ladies’ Second team had some close rubbers in the team’s away match at Grantham.

It was Grantham’s day and these close rubbers slipped away from Boston’s Catherine Ellis, Sharon Thorogood, Lesley Gibbons and Hilda Hasting,s leaving it a 4-0 win to Grantham.

Boston Tennis Club are currently running a ‘Join Up In October’ campaign for anyone interested in playing the sport.
