But the 18-year-old, who harbours hopes of a place in the England squad for the Commonwealth Games, was unable to make it out of his group in the seniors tournament.

Walker began well in Group 32 of the mens seniors, beating Andreas Levenko of Austria 4-1.

But defeat by the same scoreline by Belgian Robin Devos saw him exit the competition.

In the Under 21 boys tournament he was drawn with Bence Majoros of Hungary and Norway’s Lars Ronneberg in Group 2.

Walker beat them both to qualify for the final 32, but when he came up against Frenchman Romain Lorentz he came unstuck, losing 3-1.

In a small consolation for the Worksop teen, who is based full-time in Germany, his foe went on to win the Under 21s title.

A former Redlands and Valley student, Walker trains with Zugbrucke Grenzau and plays for TTC Selingenstadt.
