League gives Sam backing

Worksop table tennis star Sam Walker has received the backing of the league he grew up in.

The teenager, who plays in the professional ranks in Germany, and has recently made a breakthrough into the England senior squad, received a cheque from Andy Lee, chairman of the Worksop and District Table Tennis League.

A league statement said: “The cheque is in recognition of all Sam’s achievements in the sport.”

“The money presented was from the David Hooton Development Fund which is part of the ongoing sponsorship of the league from DTH Engineering.”

Walker, the reigning English Under 21 champion, will be in action at the 56th European Youth Championships from 12th to 21st July in Ostrava, Czech Republic

Representing the England junior boys, Walker is considered a medal hope by the national authorities.

The former Redlands pupil has helped himself to two Commonwealth Championship medals and his first ITTF Junior Circuit title in Malta this year.
