Legs Eleven earn ten out of ten for whitewash win in Blitz Super League

SUPERMAC -- Gainsborough Blitz member Tom Macintosh receives his trophy after finishing runner-up in a junior event at Bishop Auckland.

After defeating Scorpions 4-1 in their First Division curtain-raiser the previous week, Legs Eleven were in fine form again, coming away with all three points by whitewashing home side Eagles 5-0. Their stars on the night were Darija Vasilijevaite and Carl Burlington, who were both unbeaten.

Scprions tried hard to bounce back when taking on Barbarians. But they were denied all three points when the opposition pair of Hayden Denman and Chris Whiteley gained revenge for their singles defeats by John Mackey and Mick Powell.

Denman and Whiteley combined in the doubles to win 15-13, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10 to salvage a point from the match for Barbarians, who were playing their first game of the new season.

In the other top-flight contest of the night, Bad News recovered from a 3-2 reverse in their opening fixture to win by the same scoreline against Infernos, despite a double for Kurt Hutson.

The league featured only one match in Division Two, with Classy Cas living up to their name by defeating Jam Jars 4-1. The standout performer was Dave Harris, who won both of his singles games.

Away from the Super League, some of the Blitz club’s players were in action in tournaments over the weekend -- and three of them found success.

At Scunthorpe, Amy Gittings claimed the women’s singles title without losing a set. The tournament was ideal match practice for Gittings as she prepares to represent South Yorkshire in the county championships at Halton, Widnes this coming weekend.

Also at Scunthorpe, Adam Gittings reached the semi-finals of the prizefighter event, while Tom Macintosh enjoyed a profitable time in a tourney at Bishop Auckland, County Durham. Competing in the junior competition, Macintosh was runner-up, and he was also a semi-finalist in the cadets’ category.

Blitz are always looking for new players, so anyone wanting to give table tennis a try should turn up at one of the club’s social sessions, which are held every Thursday at the Gainsborough Academy from 6.40 pm to 9 pm.

The club continues to go from strength to strength since it was formed by local table-tennis enthusiast and young, up-and-coming coach Paul Johnson in 2009.
